Regardless of whether it’s the uppercase or lowercase version of the letter, you’re creating a curved line that looks a bit like a fishing hook.
Writing the letter is easy to learn, but we are not here to create a regular version of this letter! Instead, we will show you how to create a bubble letter J.
We will do that by taking you through 6 fun and easy steps to show you how to draw it and add some details to make it even better.
In the end, there will also be a section exploring some fun ideas you can try to make even more unique.
How to Draw A Bubble Letter J
Step 1
As we said in the introduction, the letter J is a simple curved shape that resembles a fish. Sometimes a capital J can have a line at the top, but we don’t have that in this design.
With this in mind, we now draw the first part of this letter. Before you start drawing a line, we recommend planning it with a pencil first.
You can draw a large regular J shape around which you will build the bubble version.
You don’t have to do this, but it can help! For this step, we will draw a curved, rounded line for the lower-left part of the letter.
Once you’ve drawn this letter section to match our reference image, we can move on to step 2.
Step 2
We will keep things very simple in this second step of the guide. In this part, we will extend the line you started in the previous step.
We drew the small “tail” section of the J in the previous step, and in this one, we drew the base of the letter.
Keep the line you landed on in the previous step and the curve. As you can see in the reference image, this line then starts to curve.
We’ll create the central column of J where this line ends, but that comes in the next few steps. First, match the drawing as closely as possible to our example.
Then we can move on to step 3, where we will continue to build this letter.
Step 3
In this third step of the tutorial, we’ll start drawing the central column of the bubble letter J. This is done by adding a slightly curved vertical line.
As you can see in the reference image we provided, this line extends where the line in step 2 ended.
Ideally, when you draw this line, you want it to be straight but not too straight. We want straight lines, as we want the letter to look like it’s made out of a bubble.
Once you’ve drawn that side of the pillar, there’s a large dot on the left. The next step is to finish the outline before adding some interior details.
Step 4
As mentioned in step 3, this fourth step of the guide is about completing the outline of this letter J.
For this, we will use a curved, wavy line to fill the gap on the left side of the letter. It starts where the line ends at the top of the J in the previous step.
It falls out and then curves sharply to finish the end of the J. Once this line has been drawn, the outline for the letter is complete!
Now you’re ready to draw some interior details, but ensure you’re ready before moving on to step five.
One way to do this is to erase any pencil lines you used to prepare the drawing. We have already mentioned how to draw the regular letter J with a pencil.
If so, now would be a good time to delete it. Then it’s time for Step 5, where we will add tremendous interior details to the letter!
Step 5
The main goal of this guide was to take the letter J and make it look like we made it out of a bubble or balloon. We’ll now top off this effect with some simple details.
First, we’ll make the letter reflective by drawing some simple oval shapes on top of the letters. As you can see in the reference image, we are using two of these oval shapes.
There will be one at the top of the J and one at the back on the left side of the letter. You can add a few more reflective dots if you like!
Next, we’ll create the illusion that the J is made from a bubble or balloon by adding texture lines to the letter.
These go into the outline and help make it look more like an object than a flat letter.
You can use this detail to add some of those lines to enhance the effect even more.
Once those lines are drawn, you can add color in step six! However, you don’t have to move on just yet.
Before coloring your photo, you can also add some extra fun details. For example, you could draw a background for the image.
This can be a simple background or draw a natural environment. We’ll review some ideas for you to try after the next step, but feel free to think of some ideas in the meantime.
Step 6
It’s always fun to kick back with some coloring fun, and that’s precisely what we will do for this final step. This is your opportunity to show off your color creativity!
In our example image, we show you one of several color options you have for your design.
As the main subject of this image, we have chosen a dark blue color scheme. Although dark blue is the primary color, we also used lighter tones.
Mixing light and dark tones can make the reflective areas more visible and make the image less flat.
You could choose the same colors as us, but you can also use other colors you love! It doesn’t even have to be just one color.
There are also some fun ways to incorporate many colors, so you should use your creativity and explore the options with your favorite art tools.
With that, your drawing is complete! Before we wrap it all up, let’s give you some ideas on how to make it even better.
